Choosing a Microdermabrasion Treatment

Microdermabrasion can treat a wide variety of skin problems.  It improves wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, large pores, and other common skin ailments.  It’s easy to do a microdermabrasion treatment at home, or you can visit a skin care professional.  Don’t confuse it with dermabrasion, which is a stronger process that involves more recovery time and should only be done by professionals.

Microdermabrasion is a form of manual exfoliation, which is an important part of a skin care routine.  You’ll have smoother skin after a single session.  It will take a while to see full results, especially if you are trying to improve wrinkles or acne scars.  Exfoliation treatments like microdermabrasion take a few months of regular use to achieve big changes.

Exfoliating with microdermabrasion will make your other skin care products more effective.  Removing dead skin and other debris allows your creams and serums to better penetrate live skin.  When they are absorbed properly, they are the most effective.

If you’d like to use a microdermabrasion treatment at home, you have quite a few options.  There are many products on the market today because it has become so popular.  You can use a microdermabrasion kit that contains a small device with a rotating head.  You cover the head with a microdermabrasion cream and use it to polish your skin.  There are also scrubs available that are designed to be used by hand.  They contain the polishing aluminum oxide crystals which have a very fine grit and are superior that other exfoliators found in facial scrubs.  You can also try microdermabrasion cloth.  These cloths are very intense if you scrub too hard, so be sure to use gentle pressure.  Using a cloth is a lot cleaner than other forms of microdermabrasion that use a scrub with a cream or gel base that have to be rinsed off.

When you use microdermabrasion, be careful with the skin around the eyes and the lips.  It’s not recommended that you treat these areas because they are so thin and sensitive.  You should treat your neck when you treat your face.  This often overlooked area ages just as fast as the face. You can use microdermabrasion on your body as well.  It’s a great treatment to improve skin on the forearms and back of the hands.  It can also reduce stretch marks.

You can use a microdermabrasion treatment once a week, or every other week.  In the beginning, it’s best to introduce the technique into your routine gradually.  This is especially true if you have sensitive skin.  Don’t use too much pressure and polish for too long.  Sometimes it is hard to notice if you have over exfoliated until hours later.  There shouldn’t be any pain involved in the procedure.  If your skin is really red and irritated a few hours after the treatments, you’ve probably gone too far.  Give your skin a couple of weeks to completely heal before trying it again.  Over time, you’ll be able to use microdermabrasion more frequently.  It’s a good idea to use sunscreen while you are using microdermabrasion.  The freshly exposed skin burns easier than normal skin.
